EO4SEM at the Emissions Monitoring from Space and Ground October Conference 2026

Filipe Brandão presented EO4SEM, a project exploring how Earth Observation can support the monitoring of emissions from maritime transport, at the Emissions Monitoring from Space and Ground Conference 2026, organised at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy.

The project brings together satellite observations, atmospheric measurements and maritime emissions modelling to investigate how Earth Observation can complement existing approaches to monitoring ship emissions and contribute to a better understanding of their environmental impact. 🚢🌍

EO4SEM is a great example of the work we are doing at GMV in Earth Observation, turning satellite data into practical solutions to address environmental challenges and support more effective emissions monitoring.

A big thank you to European Space Agency - ESA and Antony Delavois for organising this excellent conference and bringing together the scientific, operational and policy communities working on emissions monitoring.

Invisible No More: Tracking Ship Emissions from Space – Watch the Recording

Organisers: GMV, European Space Agency (ESA), Ocean OS, Satellite Applications Catapult, and partners

Thank you to everyone who joined “Invisible No More: Tracking Ship Emissions from Space,” a joint webinar that brought together the EO4SEM (ESA-funded) and EMMA (Innovate UK-funded) projects to show how satellite remote sensing and AI-powered modelling are making maritime pollution visible. If you missed it, or want to revisit the discussion, the full recording is now available on YouTube.(Link below)

What Was Covered

EO4SEM Project Insights: How satellite missions (Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI, PRISMA, EnMAP, GHGSat) and advanced inversion models fill gaps in AIS tracking to quantify NOₓ, CO₂ and methane emissions across open-sea shipping lanes and ports.

EMMA Coastal Modelling: How ground-truthed AI, air quality sensor networks and satellite data combine into an “environmental weather forecast” for port zones such as Plymouth Sound.

Regulatory Alignment: How Earth Observation data supports the European Green Deal, Fit for 55 and FuelEU Maritime goals by providing independent, scalable emission baselines.

Mouhamadou Makhtar Ndiaga Diouf (LSCE) presenting at EGU May 2026

2. TROPOMI-Derived NOX Emissions from Sea Shipping: Estimates Along Major Lanes and for Individual Vessels

  • Authors: M. M. N. Diouf, H. Vignesoult, A. Fortems-Cheiney, F. Chevallier, A. Héraud, S. Beirle, J.-P. Jalkanen, A. Maragkidou, F. G. Brandão, R. Gini, D. Sengupta, J. Vitorino, A. Delavois, and G. Broquet
  • Overview: This presentation introduces advanced atmospheric inverse modeling techniques developed within the EO4SEM project. By assimilating Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI $\text{NO}_2$ imagery and combining it with Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking, the study demonstrates monthly $\text{NO}_x$ emission budgeting across European seas, flux-divergence modeling along major shipping lanes, and plume-detection methods capable of estimating instant $\text{NO}_x$ emissions from individual large vessels.

Dhritiraj Sengupta (GMV) presenting at the EGU May 2026

EO4SEM Consortium Highlights Maritime Emission Research at EGU 2026

May 3–8, 2026

The EO4SEM Consortium will present its latest research findings at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026 in Vienna, Austria.

Researchers from across the project will deliver two key scientific presentations showcasing how satellite remote sensing, data fusion, and inverse modeling advance maritime emission tracking from global shipping corridors down to individual vessels:
